The Auschwitz sign, bearing the ominous “Arbeit macht frei” slogan (Work Will Set You Free), has been returned after mysteriously disappearing. That’s a good thing. But police still don’t know why a group of five men stole the sign. It appears that they were not neo-Nazis, leaving a host of troubling questions. Were the men operating under orders? Fulfilling some kind of sick purchase order? Why was the sign stolen shortly after Germany announced an $86m endowment fund for the preservation of Auschwitz? Or so near to the 65th anniversary of the camp’s liberation?
